1. 2 hours and 15 minutes is too long for church services in languages one doesn't know to last.
2. Gesturing by repeatedly folding your hand downwards is not a cute way to say "bye-bye," it means "come here." Be careful not to let mothers think you want to kidnap their children.
3. Smiling covers a multitude of linguistic errors.
4. If you are a white woman in Taiwan, be very careful what image you project. The natives already assume you're a tramp who drinks too much (thank you, American media); you probably don't want to perpetuate this myth.
5. 100 Taiwan dollars are worth more than you think.
6. Garbage is accumulated in numerous categories. It also must NEVER be left out, as this will attract unwanted guests to your living space.
7. Little children stare a lot here, but not ONLY at white people, just LONGER at white people.
8. The generosity of the Taiwanese is quite possibly unparalled by any other people group.
Today is Moon Festival, one of about three major holidays here. Moon cakes are everywhere (assorted baked goodies)and everyone is barbecuing on their front lawns, which here usually means the sidewalk in front of their storefronts. I'm going to a rooftop party in a few minutes for feasting and moon-enjoyment. Now, what does one wear to a Moon Feastival party?
