I found this article to be quite an interesting take on the Passion, but it might be a little off:
In being crucified, Jesus was not uniquely singled out for the most extreme suffering ever inflicted but was joined to thousands of his fellow Jews who said no to Rome -- and who suffered similarly for it.
...and I really liked this guy's take on it:
Then Jesus said to them, "Dudes! I am high on life! If any person, male, female, transgendered, lesbian or gay, would follow me (not that I want followers, because you all carry the Truth within you and don't need me), let that person take up their prozac and be affirmed in their wellness. Sacrifice is soooo, like, negative."
